Bozeman, MT
Artist Point, Yellowstone National Park
During the summer season, areas such as Old Faithful, Grand Prismatic, Fairy Falls Overlook, Artist Point and other major overlooks along the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone are considered high visitation areas.
- Getting in
- Two rules disagree here and you should know both. Servicewide, NPS says: "In most cases, permits and fees are not required for filming, still photography, or audio recording that involves eight or fewer individuals" (https://www.nps.gov/aboutus/news/film-and-photo-permits.htm). But Yellowstone's own film permit page adds a condition the servicewide page does not — you are exempt only if "The activity does not take place in a small or confined area that receives a high volume of visitation" — and the same page names Artist Point as one of those areas in summer. A hired photographer at Artist Point in July arguably falls outside the exemption. Call the Film Permit Office at (307) 344-2110 or email yell_film_permits@nps.gov before booking, or use Lake Butte Overlook instead.
