The Long Way

A formal garden most New Yorkers have never been to

New York, New York · 2 nights · Apr · May · Jun · Sep · Oct · up to 8

Central Park is 843 acres and almost everyone experiences the same forty of them. The Conservatory Garden is at the top of the park, formal, walled, and quiet in a way nowhere else in Manhattan manages. It is a long way from the tourist end, which is exactly the point. Two nights, because this is a city trip and the third day is always the one you spend tired.

The ending

A walled formal garden at the far end of the park — hedges, a fountain, and a wisteria pergola — with the noise of the city audible and nowhere in sight.

That is Conservatory Garden, Central Park. See how private it is and when it’s open.

Is the Conservatory Garden different from the rest of Central Park?

Administratively, yes — and that is the part that matters here. The Garden and the rest of the park are handled by different bodies with different rules, so the answer for one is not the answer for the other.

Best time of year?

Late April and May for the wisteria, or October. July in Manhattan is its own decision.

The planner doesn’t build New York, New York yet — we can name the places here but not yet enough of them around it to fill 2 nights without repeating. Read this one, then build your own somewhere we can.
