The Long Way

Ocean Drive, the Cliff Walk, and houses built to be looked at

Newport, Rhode Island · 3 nights · May · Jun · Sep · Oct · up to 12

Newport is a sailing town with a row of Gilded Age houses along the cliff, and the two halves of it barely speak to each other. Do both. The Cliff Walk runs three and a half miles between the lawns and the sea, and the back half is rougher and emptier than the front. An afternoon on a twelve-metre boat in the bay is the part people remember. Take the shingled house on Ocean Drive if there are twelve of you and The Chanler if there are two.

The ending

A grass point at the far end of Ocean Drive where the road turns back toward town, bay on one side, open sound on the other, and kites over the field behind you.

That is Brenton Point State Park, Ocean Drive. See how private it is and when it’s open.

Do

  • Cliff Walk + Breakers mansion tour
  • 12-meter America's-Cup yacht charter
  • Tea at Rosecliff or Marble House
  • Newport Vineyards + Greenvale tasting tour

Eat

  • The Mooring
  • Bouchard Restaurant

Stay

  • The Chanler at Cliff Walk
  • Ocean-Drive 6BR shingled estate

Which mansion?

The Breakers for the scale of it, Rosecliff if you would rather sit down. Two in a day is one too many.

Can this take twelve people?

Yes, and it is built to. The Ocean Drive house sleeps them, the boat takes them, and Brenton Point is a state park with a car park at the end of the road.

The planner doesn’t build Newport, Rhode Island yet — we can name the places here but not yet enough of them around it to fill 3 nights without repeating. Read this one, then build your own somewhere we can.
