The Long Way

Adobe, galleries, and a slot canyon an hour south

Santa Fe, New Mexico · 3 nights · Apr · May · Sep · Oct · up to 8

Santa Fe is seven thousand feet up, so the light is hard, the nights are cold in every month, and the first day should not be the strenuous one. Canyon Road is half a mile of adobe galleries and it is a walk rather than a shopping trip. Tent Rocks is an hour south on Cochiti Pueblo land and it is the reason to come — a slot canyon that opens onto cones of volcanic ash weathered into tents. It is day-use, ticketed, and shut two days a week, so it is the fixed point you build the rest around.

The ending

A slot canyon that narrows to shoulder width and then opens onto a field of pale stone cones, each one capped by the boulder that kept the ash beneath it from washing away.

That is Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks National Monument. See how private it is and when it’s open.

Why is Tent Rocks so hard to book?

It sits on Cochiti Pueblo land, entry is capped and ticketed, and it is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays year-round, with a stretch shut in midwinter and further days closed for the Pueblo's own calendar. Check your date before you book anything else.

Is the altitude a problem?

A mild one on the first day for most people. Plan the flat things first and the canyon second.

The planner doesn’t build Santa Fe, New Mexico yet — we can name the places here but not yet enough of them around it to fill 3 nights without repeating. Read this one, then build your own somewhere we can.
