Two states, one lake, and a beach nobody can build on
Lake Tahoe, California & Nevada · 3 nights · June–September · up to 8
The lake straddles a state line, and that matters more than it sounds: the two shores are governed by different agencies with different rules, and the paperwork for the same photograph is not the same on both sides. Sand Harbor is the boulder-strewn one on the Nevada shore and the water there is startlingly clear. Emerald Bay is the postcard, on the California side, and it is a drive rather than a stroll.
The ending
Granite boulders standing out of water so clear the shadows show on the bottom, with the far shore going pink and the near rock going gold.
We'll set the moment aside in the itinerary, but we won't name a spot we can't stand behind.

Which shore?
Whichever suits the day — but know they are different jurisdictions. We tell you which rule applies to the spot you pick, and they genuinely differ.
How early is early enough at Sand Harbor?
Earlier than you think in season. The parking fills and then the gate closes, which is a hard stop rather than a queue.
The planner doesn’t build Lake Tahoe, California & Nevada yet — we can name the places here but not yet enough of them around it to fill 3 nights without repeating. Read this one, then build your own somewhere we can.
