Phoenix, AZ
Camelback Mountain — Echo Canyon Summit
- Getting in
- Phoenix publishes no photography or proposal permit rule for its preserves, but it does close this trail outright on heat days: "On days when the NWS issues an Extreme Heat Warning, the following trails are restricted from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m: Camelback Mountain Preserve - Echo Canyon and Cholla Trail". That is not rare — "In 2024, Phoenix experienced 45 days of trail closures due to extreme heat warnings between May 1 and October 13" (https://www.phoenix.gov/administration/departments/parks/activities-facilities/trails/heat-safety.html). Park hours are "Sunrise to sunset", and Cholla Trail is separately "closed for construction from August 17-28, 2026". Confirm with the gatehouse at 602-534-5867.

We can name this spot, but we can’t yet fill the days around it in Phoenix — not enough real places to build the rest of the trip without repeating. Build one somewhere we can, or keep this spot in mind for when we get there.
