The Long Way

A canyon, a river, and Yellowstone for the day

Bozeman, Montana · 3 nights · June–September

Bozeman is a base camp more than a destination, and the drive south into Yellowstone is close enough to do in a day without making the day about driving. Give the canyon its own morning — Hyalite is a short way out of town and the guide keeps you off the trails everyone else is on. Save the river for whichever afternoon the water's running clearest, and go into the park on the day the forecast looks best, since the interior roads and the weather both have their own opinions about the schedule.

The ending

A famous overlook above a canyon, where a river drops in two long falls and the rock runs orange and grey in bands below you. This is one of the most visited points in the park, so the moment happens in the open, among other people looking at the same view, rather than in private.

That is Artist Point, Yellowstone National Park. See how private it is and when it’s open, or build the rest of the trip around it.

Is the overlook actually crowded, or just popular in theory?

Genuinely crowded, especially in summer. It does not thin out toward evening the way a single-trail spot would. If privacy matters more to you than the view, ask about the backup overlook instead.

Is Yellowstone open the whole trip?

This trip only runs summer into early fall, which is the season we can plan it in. The park keeps its own hours and its own road schedule, which the ranger station will confirm for your date — worth a call before you drive south, since the interior is a long way in.
